Over the past 48 hours, our planet has been hit by dozens of earthquakes of a magnitude 4.0 or greater. According to the USGS, there has been a massive increase in earthquake activity over the past few years. Scientists acknowledge that what is taking place is highly unusual. But as Latter-day Saints, we understand that this is part of what we can expect prior to our Savior's return to the earth (see Elder Oak's April 2004 General Conference talk).
For years, we've been warned of calamities and told to prepare for them. Sometimes it's scary to think of the possibilities, but the Lord said, “Be not troubled, for, when all these things shall come to pass, ye may know that the promises which have been made unto you shall be fulfilled” (D&C 45:35). Those promises are pretty amazing and something to truly look forward to! So, in the meantime, let's be prepared for whatever may come, for "if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
This Thursday is the Great Utah Shakeout, which means that all week we'll focus on earthquake preparedness. Click here to find out more about the Shakeout and learn about how you can participate! The website is filled with great information about what to do before, during and after an earthquake.
